LKG, UKG classes launched in DK and Udupi Anganwadis; English training begin

Mangaluru, July 2, 2025: In a move aimed at strengthening early childhood education and giving children a head start in English learning, the government is preparing to launch LKG and UKG classes in 110 Anganwadis across the coastal belt.

Out of these, 70 centres will be in Dakshina Kannada and 40 in Udupi district. The Department of Women and Child Development has begun initial preparations, and while formal orders are awaited, the new classes are expected to begin from August 2, according to sources.

Anganwadi

Earlier, there was a proposal to introduce LKG and UKG in government schools. However, opposition from Anganwadi workers and helpers—concerned about the potential sidelining of Anganwadis—led the government to revise its plan. It was then decided to integrate the pre-primary sections within the Anganwadis themselves.

Staff Training Underway

Shaila K Karigi, Child Development Project Officer for Mangaluru Rural, said selected Anganwadi workers and helpers will be trained in phases to effectively teach LKG and UKG curriculum. Students will receive free textbooks, instruction, and mid-day meals.

"Preparations are in full swing. Anganwadis with adequate infrastructure have been identified and equipped with smart TVs and textbooks. Classes will begin as soon as the official green signal is given," confirmed Usman, Deputy Director of the Department of Women and Child Development, Dakshina Kannada.
