ZP has prepared Rs. 149 crore annual project – Shailaja Bhat

Mangalore, Nov 23, 2011 : Speaking at a meeting, Shailaja Bhat, the president of the Zilla Panchayat, said that the Zilla Panchayat Planning Committee has prepared an annual project for Rs. 149 crore, which includes the state grant of Rs. 74 crore and the central grant of Rs. 74 crore. The ZP has requested the state government to release Rs. 49 crore in addition for the following fiscal year, she added. 

 

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. K. N. Vijayaprakash, the CEO of the Zilla Panchayat, said that, according to the Karnataka Panchayat Raj Act of 1993, Section 310, every district ought to have a district planning committee and that every urban and rural local body ought to submit its action plan to this committee for approval. 

Further explaining the structure of the district planning committee, he said that it ought to be headed by the president of the ZP while the mayor of the district ought to be its vice president. The committee is to comprise 15 ZP members and 9 TMC members while the CEO of the ZP should be its secretary. Besides, the deputy commissioner of the district, 3 MLCs, and 8 MLAs should be its invited members. This committee is expected to hold meetings once in 3 months, he added. 

Suggesting a permanent solution for bad roads, Naveen Kumar Menala, the member of the ZP, said that a proposal should be submitted for concretization of roads because the district receives heavy rainfall. 

Dr. Vijayaprakash directed the concerned officials to provide safe drinking water to 185 higher primary schools in the district and complete all the pending work on constructing school toilets by Dec 31. He also announced that the pothole-filling work within ZP jurisdiction has commenced and the total cost is estimated to be Rs. 13.5 crore.  

Mayor Praveen and Dhanalakshmi, the vice president of the ZP, were also present.
