Mangalore Mar 9, 2016: Saara Aboobakkar Award was conferred on noted writer Anupama Prasad at a ceremony held at St. Agnes College, Mangaluru on March 9, Wednesday under the auspices of Karavali Lekhakiyara Vachakiyara Sangha and Kannada Department of the college. Eminent writer Saara Aboobakkar in whose name the award is instituted was the chief guest on the occasion.
In her address, Saara said that it was good to see Anupama Prasad conferred the award for her writings. Students should develop an interest in reading newspapers and novels to gain knowledge, she said and also exhorted students to fight against injustice in society.
Speaking on the occasion writer Srinivas Kakaliya said that Saara Aboobakker had to face several challenges and criticism for her writings against some of the practices in the society. Her stories narrate Muslim lives in the areas bordering Karnataka and Kerala, focusing on the inequality and injustices meted out to women by the male society. Her writings are an inspiration for other writers, said Srinivas.
