Mangalore, May 16, 2012 : Mangalore University will not allow Vittala Malekudiya, a mass communication and journalism student who is now in jail for alleged Naxal associations, to answer his second semester examination because he has attendance shortage.
Shivashankar Murthy, the vice-chancellor of Mangalore University, wrote a letter to the Jurisdictional Judicial Magistrate First Class in Belthangady that Vittala Malekudiya’s attendance is lower than the required 75 percent, owing to which he cannot be allowed to answer his final exams, which begin on May 21.
The court had recently ruled that the university must allow Vittala Malekudiya to answer his internal exams on April 16.
Prof. Murthy wrote to the court that the university felt it necessary to bring these rules to the court’s attention, adding that the university will now act as per the court’s directive.
Meanwhile, Dinesh Hegde Ullepady, legal representative of Vittala Malekudiya, said that he will challenge the university’s decision before the High Court.
