Mangalore, Nov 1, 2012 : Dr. Harish Kumar, commissioner of Mangalore City Corporation (MCC), said that action will be taken on anybody found throwing plastic waste beside the road, with effect from Dec 1. He was speaking at the monthly meeting of the MCC held on Wednesday.


The commissioner announced that the district administration will ban the use of plastic in Mangalore from Nov 1, Thursday and will spend one month spreading public awareness about the adverse effects of using plastic. The power to take the final decision regarding imposing a ban on plastic, however, lies with the district administration, he said.
He further announced that plastic waste will be collected from every house and taken to Pachanady Dumping Yard, which has a plastic unit.
Speaking about the private bus shelter in Pumpwell, the commissioner said that the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) will first widen the Nanthoor to Talapady road as connectivity has to be provided from the private bus shelter to the road. An underpass needs to be constructed for this purpose and it requires Rs. 10 crore.
The NHAI had stated that an underpass can be constructed if the central government approves the proposal, adding that the decision needs to be taken at the government level. The district administration, which has already convened 3 meetings, has already written to the government.
The commissioner also said that Harsha Gupta, managing director for KUDCEMP, will visit the city soon to hold a special meeting regarding the issue of ADB projects.
The mayor was forced to adjourn the meeting for sometime when corporators began debating fiercely over the ration card issue. She promised to convene a special meeting just to discuss the ration card issue.
The council also approved a proposal to concretize roads at the cost of Rs. 199.50 lakh, under the 13th finance commission. This project includes the concretizing of Bhavanthi Street Main Road for Rs. 99.50 lakh, Bondel and the Pachanady Circle for Rs. 50 lakh, and the Padavinangady Circle Road for Rs. 50 lakh. A proposal for the construction of a fish market in collaboration with KFDB was also approved at the meeting.
