Mangaluru, Oct 28, 2025: “I laid the foundation stone for the Urwa Indoor Stadium, and I inaugurated it too — it’s our government’s funding,” says CM.
“India is No. 1 in population; we must also become No. 1 in Olympic medals,” urges Chief Minister Siddaramaiah
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah called upon sportspersons to make India the No. 1 nation in Olympic medals, just as it is No. 1 in population. He was speaking after inaugurating the Chief Minister–Mangaluru India International Challenge 2025 badminton tournament held at the newly constructed Urwa Indoor Stadium.
The Chief Minister said that the state government has reserved Group-A and other posts in government departments for athletes who win medals in international events such as the Olympics and Paralympics.
“The reservation for athletes in police posts, including DySP positions, has been increased from 2% to 3%. We have also announced a cash award of ₹5 crore for Olympic medal winners who bring glory to the state and the nation. The government is ready to provide all necessary facilities and support,” he said, urging players to bring home medals.
Highlighting badminton’s global appeal, the CM praised legends like Prakash Padukone, Pullela Gopichand, Saina Nehwal, and P.V. Sindhu for laying the foundation of Indian badminton and bringing international recognition to the country.
Speaking about the venue, Siddaramaiah said, “I was the one who laid the foundation stone for this Urwa Indoor Stadium, and I am the one inaugurating it today. The funding came entirely from our government. The previous BJP government did not support the completion of this stadium. After returning as Chief Minister, I allocated ₹38 crore to ensure its completion,” he added.
