Udupi, Jan4,2013 : The long pending election to the post of Udupi Zilla Panchayat President and Vice President was held on January 4, Friday and Upendra Nayak of BJP was elected the new President. Mamatha R Shetty was elected the Vice President of the ZP.
The Congress had fielded Diwaker Kunder for the top post and Supreetha Shetty for the post of Vice President. With one woman member of the BJP abstaining, both the BJP candidates, as expected secured 15 votes each. The new Vice President Mamatha R Shetty is said to be a Halady loyalist The Congress has nine members in the ZP.
The elections to these top posts, originally scheduled to be held on October 4, 2012, were postponed owing to dissidence in the BJP which has 16 members in the 25-member House.
Rebellion brew within the BJP after former Kundapur MLA Halady Srinivas Shetty was denied a cabinet berth. Eight BJP members of Udupi ZP were Halady supporters and the election had to be postponed after neither the members of the official nor the rebel factions of the BJP turned up for the elections scheduled for October 4.
Although both the official and rebel BJP factions patched up by October 12, the Congress took the matter to the High Court challenging the decision of the regional commissioner to postpone the meeting. The High Court in its ruling on November 15 ordering the ZP to conduct the elections.
