Upadhyaya takes charge as first director of MRPL

Mangalore, Oct 2:  P. P. Upadhya took charge as the first director (technical) of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd. (MRPL), a subsidiary of ONGC, after getting an appointment order from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India. He will be the director for five years and will serve on the MRPL board.

Mr. Upadhya (56) has 32 years of experience to his credit and was the group general manager and refinery in-charge of MRPL before being appointed to his present post. During his tenure as group general manager and refinery in-charge MRPL broke its previous records of capacity utilization, signed several deals with STC Mauritius, won the Jawaharlal Nehru Centenary Award for Energy Performance, and the Most Safe Refinery Award from MoP and NG, GoI.

The Udupi-born Mr. Upadhyaya is widely acclaimed for his management style and leadership skills. He studied at NITK Suratkal and got his bachelor’s and master’s degree with I Class Distinction in chemical engineering in 1976 and 1978, respectively. A year later, he joined Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. as a graduate engineering trainee and opted to join MRPL as a senior manager 17 years back.

He was also a trustee on NMPT Board for 2 years. He was the topper in the interview for this post, which was held by the Petroleum Enterprises Selection Board in July 2010.
