Union HRD minister asks education institutions to deal harassment cases of women with firm hand

Mangalore Jan 4, 2013: Union Minister for Human Resource Development MM Pallam Raju has directed heads of educational institutions to initiate stern action with regard to cases of harassment of female students.


Speaking to press persons at Circuit House on January 4, Friday after attending a meeting with managements of various colleges, the Minister said there was no question of tolerating harassment of women in campuses.

The Minister also emphasized the need to give due attention to ensure quality of education. It is the duty of the educational institutions to initiate necessary steps considering the  fact that parents were spending huge sums on education of their children, he added.


On the allegation of saffronization of text books, the minister said the education boards of the respective states need to tackle the issue as the Centre can only suggest guidelines or caution states when they erred.


Managements and students of various schools and colleges who were  present  aired their opinion on various issues and placed certain demands. A demand for an independent central physiotherapy council of India was placed forth by the delegation of Dr MV Shetty College of Physiotherapy led by Dr UT Iftikar Ali, Convenor of Indian Association of Physiotherapists.


DCC President Ramanatha Rai and several Congress leaders including  MLA UT Khader, former MP Vinay Kumar Sorake Corporator Naveen D’Souza, PV Mohan, Ivan D’Souza, TK Sudhir, Manjunath Bhandari and others were present.
