UPCL is environment friendly, assures UPCL Vice President Kishore Alva

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Feb 28, 2011: Udupi Power Corporation Ltd. (UPCL) claims that it is among the most environment friendly power plants in the country. In a recent press release, UPCL Vice President (corporate affairs) Kishore Alva said that the plant functions as per stipulated environmental norms and has invested in special environmental protection infrastructure.

The release also states that the fly ash is taken in its dry form to the ash pond in closed bulkers and is disposed into the ash pond in concentrated slurry form. The ash at the bottom is withdrawn in water impounded hoppers and disposed in the wet form after dewatering in open trucks to the ash pond, where it is dumped. The ash pond always contains water, and during the monsoons, the excess water is recycled to the main plant, treated, and used for other purposes.

The UPCL has also constructed an ash pond to dump ash in its slurry form in emergency condition and is currently exploring ways to utilize this ash.
Since the water in the pond has dried up, UPCL is now discharging ash in concentrated slurry form and the water is filled in the ash pond. Assuring that there is no emission from the ash pond, the release informed that there is no public road along the ash pond dyke and the entire corridor along with the ash pond is in a protected zone. No ash is being dumped into the sea, the release confirmed.

The press release also states that UPCL has invested in special environment protection infrastructure such as a 275m flue stack, an FGD (Flue Gas Desulphurization), use of imported coal containing lower ash instead of high-ash Indian coal, impervious layers for the coal storage yard and the ash pond area, and disposal system for dry ash.
