Mangalore, March 28, 2013 : A huge rally and a symbolic NH Block agitation was organised by the Suratkal Nagarika Samithi and Anti Tollgate Action Committee on March 27, Wednesday in protest against the construction of a tollgate by the NHAI near the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) in Suratkal.
The NH 66 near the NITK campus was blocked for some time by the agitators. Suratkal town also observed a bundh on Wednesday with shopkeepers voluntarily downing their shutters, in support of the cause.
Subhaschandra Shetty, President of the Samithi who addressed the agitators said the tollgate was being constructed by flouting all rules and added rules do not permit setting up of tollgates within a city corporation limit. He also warned that the Samithi would move the court if the NHAI did not yield to its demand.
Revathi Putran, local corporator, who also spoke said the tollgate will not be allowed to come up in the area at any cost. At the same time she pointed out that the MCC had long back resolved against the construction of the tollgate and that even the NHAI officials are aware of the problem which a toll gate in the area may create.
Corporators, Ashok Shetty, Pratibha Kulai, Sumitra, Ayaaz, former corporator, Harish, Mahabala Rai Mukka, Pushparaj Shetty Kudumboor, representatives of various organizations including that of autorickshaw drivers and tourist car drivers took part in the protest.

why NH collecting toll? we already paying road tax n more tax and not even compled bykampadt railover bridge, and one more thing road parlelel to flyovers in Surthkal, kulur,kottra etc have no proper servce Road,they are not even completed bikernakate overbridge | |
