Title of new Tulu comedy film changed from ’Rampa’ to ’Sompa’

Mangalore, July 27, 2012: Artist Thamma Lakshmana informed reporters at a press conference held in Press Club today that the title of the new Tulu comedy movie directed by Rajan Lyallpuri and produced by Namratha Hegde Films Productions has been changed from Rampa to Sompa. 

He said that the name of the movie has been changed because the family of J. Ramappa Poojary, popularly known as Rampa in Mangalore, had objected to it. The family of Rampa had requested the movie crew to change the title of the movie as it would be an insult to Rampa.

Further, he said that the movie is not related to the life of Rampa in anyway and the name of the movie is used only once when the hero introduces himself. The movie was given the title of Rampa because its hero has the qualities of Lord Rama. The movie has nothing to do with the life of Rampa, the renowned personality of Mangalore, he clarified. 

He said that the movie will not require any changes as the title was not used in the film and will be released on time. 

He also expressed its regrets that the film will face some financial loss as the new title “Sompa” has nothing to do with the movie, but was used only to please Rampa’s family. He also stated that the family might regret getting the name changed in future as the film shows only the greatness of the character. 

Speaking on the occasion, Dinesh Anchan, one of Rampa’s family members, said that, although the movie is not related in any way to Rampa, the use of his name will have an adverse effect on his image. Moreover, the title directly brings to mind the image of Rampa, who had become very popular for his jokes. Mr. Anchan also assured the movie crew that the family will give compensation for any loss the film incurs because of the change in name. 

Aravind Bolar, film actor; Geetha Hegde, producer; and J. Narayan Poojary, son of J. Rampanna Poojary’s elder brother, were also present.
