Patna/New Delhi, Oct 25, 2026: A controversial remark by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi at an event in Patna on Sunday triggered a political row, with the BJP accusing him of insulting the Prime Minister, his late father and the country. The Congress defended the comment as an idiom.
The controversy erupted during an event marking the 139th birth anniversary of Shri Krishna Singh, Bihar’s first chief minister. Responding to a remark from the audience that Modi would not lose power, Kharge retorted, “Modi ka baap bhi jayega,” repeating the statement three times.

The exchange sparked a commotion, with Congress supporters allegedly assaulting the man, identified as Santosh Kumar, before ejecting him from the venue.
Outside the hall, Kumar said he had been misunderstood. He claimed he had said, “Unless there is a revolt, Modi will not go,” but that only part of his statement was heard.
The BJP launched a sharp attack on Kharge, with party leaders accusing the Congress of resorting to personal insults instead of debating development and public welfare. The party also announced plans for nationwide protests over the remark.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah criticised Kharge on X, accusing him of violating norms of public decorum and alleging that the Congress had repeatedly targeted Modi and his family with offensive remarks. BJP spokesperson Tuhin A Sinha described Kharge’s comment as “disgusting, petulant and uncouth”.
BJP president Nitin Nabin and Union Minister Giriraj Singh also condemned the remark. Singh asserted that Modi would remain in power for at least another 30 years.
Defending Kharge, Congress spokesperson Surendra Rajput said the party president had merely used an idiomatic expression and argued that Modi himself had made harsher remarks in the past.
