Surathkal, Jun 20, 2026: The giant dredger vessel Bhagavati Prem, which had been stranded off the Guddekopla beach in Surathkal for several years and had become a popular selfie and viewing spot, is gradually disappearing as dismantling work progresses.
The vessel had drifted ashore several years ago during the monsoon after breaking free from its anchor at the New Mangalore Port. Due to technical difficulties, it could not be towed back into the sea. The dredger, which had been deployed for dredging operations, was damaged by rough sea conditions and eventually came to rest near the Guddekopla shoreline.
Over time, the stranded ship became a major attraction. Hundreds of visitors would come daily to view the vessel, spend time with family members and take photographs with the ship in the background. It also became a popular evening destination for senior citizens and a landmark for tourists visiting the area.
At the same time, local residents and fishermen had repeatedly demanded its removal, claiming that the vessel was affecting fishing activities and causing environmental concerns. Following these complaints, the port authorities awarded a contract for dismantling the ship.
Dismantling work underway
The removal of Bhagavati Prem is currently being carried out in phases. The work is being undertaken when sea conditions are calm and clear. The massive vessel is being cut into smaller iron sections at the site and removed gradually.
Special technology is being used to cut the portions of the vessel that remain underwater. Skilled workers are using gas cutters to separate the structure section by section.
