New Delhi, Nov 29, 2022: The Railways and Postal Department is going to launch a joint Parcel Product (JPP) soon in Palakkad Division. The JPP will ensure first and last mail connectivity and Speedy parcel movement from collection of Parcel and up to the delivery.

A meeting was held today at Divisional Railway Manager’s office to chart out the modus operandi for the implementation of the new scheme.

The meeting was attended by Shri G.V.L Satyakumar, Executive Director/Strategic Planning & Implementation, Railway Board and Shri Trilok Kothari, Divisional Railway Manager, Palakkad , Smt. Nirmaladevi  PostMaster General, Kozhikode Circle,  Shri Murugaraj, Chief Commercial Manager, Freight Marketing, Southern Railway Shri Arun Thomas Kalathikal, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager and Shri. Muhammed Shereef, Assistant Director(Posts), Kozhikode Circle.

The new scheme

Under the new scheme, which is going to be implemented in a few months, India Post will work with railways. The Postal Department will collect the Parcels from its origin and will entrust Railways for transit. At the final leg, the delivery parcel too will be taken care of by the Postal Department. In addition to that, the Postal Department will arrange third party insurance to the Parcel Consignment and marketing of the space during the return direction.               

To suit the intermodal mix railway will modify its handling of parcels by implementing  sealed containers and Pallets. This airline-like standard box, forklifts and moveable platforms is expected to make cargo handling in railways more efficient.

According to demand, the Railways will arrange parcel space available in the Luggage cum Brake Van (SLR) coaches, 24 tonne High Capacity Parcel Wagons, 200 tonnes on demand parcel special trains to the transit of parcels.

Conceived in Budget 2022-23

The course for partnership of Indian Railways and India Post for providing logistic support for small farmers, Small and Medium Enterprises was set in the current year Budget  under the PM Gati Sakthi programme . A pilot project was launched in March 2022  in Tapti Ganga Express in between Surat and Varanasi  and it proved a success.
