Praveen Nettaru was hacked to death by two bike-borne attackers on July 26, 2022, in Bellare village of Dakshina Kannada district in Karnataka allegedly by cadres of the Popular Front of India (PFI). The PFI was banned in September later that year.

The case was initially registered at the Bellare police station. The case was handed over to the NIA later.

The NIA had filed a chargesheet against 20 people in the case in January last year. According to the NIA chargesheet, Nettaru was killed with sharp weapons as part of the PFI’s agenda to create fear among members of one community and create communal hatred and unrest in society.

The NIA probe into the murder case revealed that PFI had formed "secret killer squads" to further its agenda of establishing Islamic rule by 2047. These members were given weapons as well as training in surveillance techniques to identify, enlist and monitor leaders belonging to certain communities and groups.

Last year in October, the NIA announced cash rewards for information on three suspects in connection with the case. The NIA had said the three suspects were Popular Front of India members - Naushad (32) from Poyyagudde Padangadi, Abdul Nasir (41) from Somwarpet taluk, and Abdul Rahaman (36). The NIA has announced Rs 2 lakh each for sharing any information on the trio.
