Policeman dies in encounter with Naxals

Belthangady, Oct 9: A policeman died during an encounter between a police team and the Naxals in Manjalakadu near Savanaalu in Belthangady during the wee hours of Oct 9 Sunday. 

The encounter took place at 12:30 a.m. when the police were searching through the forests.

 

 

The deceased is Mahadeva S. Mane of Bijapur, who was in the Anti Naxal Force (ANF). The team went on a search operation with some local police personnel at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday. At 12:30 a.m., they encountered a group of 15 Naxals, suspected to be a Netravathi Naxal group led by Vikram Gowda. Since several rounds were fired by both groups, a number of policemen were injured. 

Labhu Ram, the superintendent of police, rushed to the spot, and the search operation has resumed as per a report that was issued at 9:15 a.m. 

Police personnel from Shimoga and Chikamagalur have also been deployed. 

Reportedly, Naxal activities became stronger when the monsoons receded. Certain Naxals were also suspected of visiting some of the villagers and collecting groceries from them.
