Paying guest disappears with gold ornaments

Mangalore, Dec 2, 2011 : Seventy-year-old Varija Shetty of Attavar has complained that Nirmala Veena Poojary of Kopar Khairane, Navi Mumbai, has stolen her gold ornaments.

According to the complainant, Nirmala stayed as a paying guest in her house under a false name Savitha and was introduced to her by Prema, her neighbor, four or five days back. Savita stayed indoors during the days and went out at nights. On Nov 30 Wednesday, Savita told Varija that she wanted to send a photo of herself to her husband and borrowed Varija’s gold ornaments. Varija, therefore, lend gold ornaments worth Rs. 1.5 lakh to Savita.

Varija Shetty complained that she accompanied Savita to a photo studio in Hampankatta and then to a provision store near State Bank, after which Savita completely disappeared. Varija then lodged a complaint at the Pandeshwar Police Station.

Police investigation has revealed that Savita was Nirmala’s fake name and that she holds a passport that is valid till 2015. Nirmala lives in Mundkur.

Varija Shetty lives alone because her family lives in different places. Upon recommendation of her husband’s relative, Varija’s neighbor Prema had requested Varija to allow Savita to live with her as a paying guest.
