Opposition parties flay central government on bundh day

Udupi, Sep 21, 2012 : The nationwide bundh called for by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the SP, and the left parties to protest hike in diesel prices, limits on subsidized LPG, and FDI in India’s multi-brand retail sector was successful in Udupi, although protestors caused traffic blocks at several points across the city.

 

 

In Udupi, the JD (S) and the BJP organized separate protests near the City Bus Stand.

Speaking on the occasion, Katpady Shankar Poojary, president of the Udupi Zilla Panchayat, criticized the centre for hiking diesel prices and placing limits on subsidized LPG for consumers. The hike in diesel prices will lead to rise in cost of transportation, which will in turn lead to hike in prices of essential commodities, he added.

Uday Kumar Shetty, chief of the Udupi district BJP; Vilas Nayak, president of the BJP Yuva Morcha; Githanjali Suvarna, member of the ZP; and BJP leaders Andaru Devi Prasad Shetty, Mattar Rathnakar Hegde, Ravi Ameen, Kuladi Suresh Naik, and Shymala Kunder also took part in the protest.

The Udupi unit of the JD(S) also protested in front of the JD(S) office against the UPA government’s economic policies. They shouted slogans against the central government. Party workers also visited shops and urged them to pull down their shutters in support of the bundh.

In Kundapur, left parties protested near Shashtri Circle, after which they walked in a procession to the bus stand and shouted slogans against the UPA government.

Shankar, president of the CITU District; N. Narashima, president of Kundapur taluk unit of the CITU; Suresh Kallagara, Raju Devadiga, T. Mukundan, and Ramesh Devadiga were among the protestors.
