Mangaluru, May 15, 2026: Nitte University launched its “CupWise” initiative at the Justice K S Hegde Charitable Hospital, Deralakatte, with an aim to encourage faculty members and students to use reusable cups during tea and coffee breaks and promote sustainable lifestyle practices.
The initiative was inaugurated by Dr Jayaprakash Shetty B, Senior Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Justice K S Hegde Charitable Hospital.
Addressing the gathering, Prof Dr Suma Ballal, Deputy Registrar and Chief Coordinator of the SDG Cell at Nitte University, spoke about the harmful effects of microplastic leaching from disposable paper cups when hot beverages are poured into them. She urged participants to adopt reusable cups as a simple yet effective step towards better health and environmental protection.
The programme was attended by Dr Sukanya Shetty, Vice Dean of KSHEMA; Mr Shashi Kumar Shetty, Chief NSS Coordinator of Nitte University; Dr Vinayaka Shet, Secretary of the SDG Cell; Dr Prerana Hegde; Dr Priya Alva; faculty members; and students from various institutes on the main campus.
The event concluded with participants taking a pledge to contribute towards a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable environment.
Nitte University Centre for Science Education & Research (NUCSER) has also developed an awareness video on the health impact of microplastics.
