Mangalore, September 10: Eid-ul-Fitr, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan, was celebrated with religious fervour in Mangalore on Friday, September 10. The celebrations began early in the morning with thousands of Muslims gathering at mosques and Eidgahs, the special venues for prayers organised across the City.

The highlight of Eid was the traditional gathering at the Eidgah Masjid on Light House Hill Road. The religious ceremony was performed under the guidance of Twaqa Ahmed Musliyar, the Qazi of Mangalore, at 8:00 a.m. and the members of the Zeenath Baksh Masjid Committee supervised the arrangements. People were even seen offering prayers on the roadside in Light House hill Road as everyone could not be accommodated in the venue.

Old and young dressed in new clothes greeted each other and exchanged gifts on the occasion. Children embracing one another were common sights in mosques all over the district.  Special sweet dishes such as ‘sewayian’, made of vermicelli, were also offered.

The unexpected heavy rains of this morning forced several Muslims to change their Eid prayer plans at the last minute. Some of them decided to visit the local mosques owing to lack of transportation and the bad weather.

Muslim families were also busy preparing elaborate meals to celebrate the festival.

The police made elaborate preparations to maintain peace and harmony in Mangalore throughout the Eid celebrations. Mangalore Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh said that the police had held several meetings, including ifthar meetings, during the past month and have deployed home guards, KSRPC, and DAR police in addition to the regular police personnel to maintain law and order on Eid.

The festival marks the end of Ramzan, a month of fasting, and the beginning of a new month called “Shawwal.” On Eid, Muslims break their fast with prayer and prepare a wide range of delicious sweets and dishes, which they distribute among friends, neighbors, and family members. Eid illustrates the spirit of peace, love, sharing, and brotherhood.
