New Delhi, August 07, 2025: Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Thursday slammed the Election Commission of India (ECI) over alleged vote theft and rigging, accusing it of withholding important information and colluding with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to destroy democracy in India.
Congress will hold a march to raise this issue in Bengaluru tomorrow, Gandhi said adding, the fact that democracy is being destroyed in India is gaining ground.
Emphasising the need for judiciary’s intervention, Gandhi said, "One day Opposition will come to power and all polling personnel involved in this crime will face the consequences. You (ECI) will see what we do. Judiciary needs to intervene".
Addressing a press conference in Indira Bhawan in New Delhi he said, "You (ECI) are not in the business of destroying democracy but protecting it. A huge crime is being committed against India. We have studied the pattern and are convinced that the crime is being committed on a large scale. For us, the CCTV footage and voter list are evidence, which the EC is busy destroying it. Huge criminal fraud being perpetrated by EC and the party in power. There is circumstantial evidence and our belief is strengthened by the fact that they (ECI) don’t give us data."
Hitting out at the BJP, Gandhi said unlike other political parties, the saffron party is never hit by ant-incumbency. "The exit polls say something but results are in the opposite direction. There was a time when there were no electronic voting machines and the entire country voted on a single day. But today, separate voting takes place in every state and the process continues for a month," he said.
Referring to the Haryana, Karnataka and Maharashtra elections, he said there is ample evidence to support that the polls were manipulated.
Terming the Maharashtra Lok Sabha election results as suspicious, he said that their belief was strengthened when ECI refused to provide them machine-readable voter lists. "The number of voters included in five months was much higher than that in last five years. At least 40 lakh voters were mysteriously added in Maharashtra", he added.
Speaking about Karnataka Lok Sabha polls, the MP alleged that one crore votes were stolen. "Internal polls indicated 16 wins in Karnataka Lok Sabha but Congress won only nine. The deciding factor for BJP’s victory was its margin of 1,14,046 votes in Mahadevpura and out of this, 1,00,250 votes were stolen," he said.
"There were 1,00,250 ’vote chori’ involving 11,965 duplicate voters, 40,009 with fake and invalid addresses, 10,452 bulk voters in single addresses, 4132 invalid photographs and 33,692 misuse of form 6 (allowing new voters)," he said.
The MP criticised ECI for not providing machine-readable voter list format and allegedly destroying CCTV footage from polling stations. "This strengthened our belief that EC colluded with the BJP to steal votes thereby destroy democracy," he added.
He further said that Congress filed a complaint with the ECI over these irregularities but got no response. EC helping BJP to ’destroy’ election system in India: Rahul Gandhi alleges ’massive’ vote chori, cites Bangalore Central seat as example.
