Mangaluru, Nov 01, 2021: The Cleaning of entire stretch of beaches in Dakshina Kannada, the participation of all the Gram Panchayats and Urban Local Bodies with the support of NGOs, yuvaka mandals, voluntary organisations and general public, marked the Clean India 2021-22 campaign being organised as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav on 31st Sunday. The mega event organised jointly by the Nehru Yuva Kendra Mangaluru under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat and Mangaluru City Corporation , Mahajana Sabha Bengre here on Sunday, The beaches of Talapady, Ullal, Someshwar, Bengre, Tannirbavi, Panambur, Korikatta Bykampady, Chitrapura, Suratkal Iddya, Guddekoplu, Light House and Sasihitlu beaches witnessed enthusiastic participation of the volunteers in large numbers who cleaned the beaches.
Apart from the beach cleaning, all the 232 Gram Panchayats and 14 Urban Local Bodies organised cleaning up drives in their respective jurisdictions. The day also coincided with Rashitriya Ekta Divas on the occasion of birth anniversary of Iron Man of India, Sardar Vallabhai Patel.
Dr.K.V Rajendra, Deputy commissioner, Dakshina Kannada administered the Oath of Unity (Ekta) to mark the Ekta Divas. He exhorted the public to own and show a sense of belongingness towards the surroundings they reside and not to blame the system for the prevailing situation.
Befitting tributes were paid to our national leader Vallabhai Patel on the occasion.
Inaugurating the event, S P Patnaik, Regional Director, Nehru Yuva Kendra Sanghatan - South, highlighted the role of youth in nation building by participating in voluntary activities in the interest of the community. Taking a cue from the lives of leaders of the likes of Vallabhai Patel who have sacrificed themselves for the nation, he said, adding that cleanliness should become part of individual habit system so that it transforms into a culture of the community and the entire nation.
Huge pile of trash was collected during the drive which was effectively disposed following the event, participated by volunteers of NCC, NSS, Sahaya team and other students from St. Aloysius College, students Canara, Alva’s, Besant, Government First Grade College, St. Agnes college among others who numbered over 8600 people in all.
State Director of Nehru Yuva Kendra Sanghatan Karnataka, M.N Nataraj, appreciated the efforts all concerned including the district administration and the coordinating agencies for effectively and successfully implementing the Clean India programme.
