Mannagudda Gurji utsav draws huge crowd

Mangalore, December 4: A large number of devotees participated in the Guji Utsav held at Mannagudda on Friday night.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Mannagudda Gurji is the most prestigious of all the Gurjis in Dakshina Kannada District. This year too, the Gurji Utsav was celebrated much more colorfully with fireworks illuminating the sky with vivid colors.

This festival is being held over a Hundred year in Mangalore. The Guruji Utsav signifies a small community getting together to offer poojas to Lord Ganapathy the lord of wishes. 

’Gurji" is a stationary Ratha (chariot of gods) with pillars and crown, adorned with garlands of areacanut, smeared with oil and decorated with red and white flags. Generally, crowns of Gurji are covered with piece of red clothes. A Kalasha is placed on top of the structure. Around Rs 3000 to Rs 4000 is spent on the fruits and vegetables to adorn the Gurji.

This Gurji is special because a wide variety of seasonal and rare fruits and vegetables are tied around.

it as offerings to Lord Ganesha. Most of these offerings are grown in Mangalore. These vegetables and fruits are later displayed and auctioned off at the end of the festival.
