Mangaluru, Oct 17, 2025: Garodi Thimappa Alva, a distinguished veteran of the 1971 Indo-Pak war, passed away on the evening of October 16 at his residence in Lohith Nagar, Mangaluru. He was 85.
According to his family, his mortal remains will be donated to K S Hegde Hospital in Deralakatte, honoring his lifelong commitment to service.
Alva recently published his war memoir titled Garodi Maneyinda Sena Garadige (From Garodi House to the Army Camp), which recounts his extraordinary life and military service.
Born into a farming family in Tulunadu, Alva joined the Indian Army as a young man and played a significant role in the 1971 war. During a helicopter mission near Chittagong, his aircraft came under fire from Pakistani forces. He survived a crash landing in the forest and, against overwhelming odds, made it out alive — a harrowing experience detailed in his memoir.
The 1971 Indo-Pak war, a turning point in Indian history, ended in a decisive victory under Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s leadership, with strategic direction from Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw and the valor of thousands of Indian soldiers.
Alva, who served in all three wars India fought against Pakistan, leaves behind a legacy of courage, resilience, and patriotism. His life and service remain a source of inspiration for generations to come.
