Mangaluru, December 23, 2025: Mangaluru University has decided to shut down 22 private colleges affiliated with it because of low student enrollment, an official announced. The decision was taken during an online meeting of the Academic Council chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof. P.L. Dharma on Monday.
The affected colleges will stop admitting students from the next academic year, but current students will be allowed to complete their courses without interruption.
Colleges to be Closed:
ABA Women’s First Grade College, Suratkal; Anjuman First Grade College, Mangaluru; Amruth College, Padil; Silicon College of Advanced Studies, Konchadi; Mogling Institute of German Language, Balmatta; Sars College of Arts and Science, Mangaluru; Rosario College of Management Studies, Bolar; Karavali College of Education; Premkanti College of Education; Sapient Bethany First Grade College, Nelyadi; Sharada Women’s College, Sulya; Ramkunjeshwar College; Hazrat Sayyad Madani Women’s College, Ullal; St. Sebastian College of Commerce; St. Thomas College, Beltangadi; Mar Ivanios College, Kadaba; Madhava Pai College, Manipal; Mookambika First Grade College, Byndoor; Varasiddhi Vinayaka First Grade College, Kundapura; B.D. Shetty College of Business Management, Erodi, Udupi; Vidyaniketan First Grade College, Kapu; Krishnabhai Vasudev Shenai Memorial College, Katpadi.
Arabic Study Centre Approved:
The university has also received gubernatorial approval to establish an Arabic Study Centre for research and learning of the Arabic language. The centre will focus on regional Arabic dialects, local culture, and communities in Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu districts, according to the Vice-Chancellor.
Academic Updates:
The Academic Council approved skill-based courses for the fourth semester of the B.A. Economics program.
Elective courses were approved for the third and fourth semesters of the B.A. Journalism program.
A revised PhD programme guideline, prepared by all deans, was approved to initiate new doctoral programmes.
The council decided to implement the National Higher Education Qualifications Framework (NHEQF) prescribed by the UGC across all arts, science, technology, commerce, and education departments. Under this framework, bachelor’s programmes will have 120 credits, postgraduate diplomas 40 credits, and MA, MCom, MSc, and other postgraduate courses 80 credits.
Departments were instructed to monitor foreign students enrolled in PhD programmes, including those on ICCR scholarships, even if their visas have expired.
NAAC Accreditation:
Mangaluru University will seek NAAC accreditation again this year. NAAC Director Dr. Kannan will visit the university to provide updated guidelines to department heads, Prof. Dharma stated.
