Mangaluru, July 12, 2025: Civic workers began lifting solid waste, dry waste as it was Friday, amid their colleagues continuing with the strike in Mangaluru on July 11. Waste collection had come to a standstill on Thursday when the employees began the strike.
All categories of Mangaluru City Corporation employees began their indefinite strike since Thursday in support of their various demands, including payment of salaries as per the 7th Pay Commission by the government, extension of Karnataka Government Insurance Department’s group insurance scheme, coverage under Group Provident Fund scheme, among other things.
South Kanara Municipal Employees’ Union, Karnataka State City Corporations’ Employees’ Association and Karnataka State City Corporations’ Employees’ Parishat, have jointly led the strike.
SK Municipal Employees Association General Secretary C. Bhaskar said that discussions were going on with the government in Bengaluru regarding the employees’ demand. Meanwhile, residents, including the legislators, have urged the employees not to stop solid waste collection as it would lead to chaos in the city. “We have started collecting solid waste from Friday,” he said.
