Mangalore, Dec 7, 2013 : A thief who escaped with a bag containing cash of Rs 5.10 lakh belonging to a man from Kannur, at Hampankatta in the heart of the city on December 6, Friday morning, was caught by the Pandeshwar police within an hour after the crime.
The incident took place at around 8.45 am when Ayampady, a person hailing from Kannur and who owned a sweet shop there had alighted from a train and was passing through Hampankatta along with his brother. He was caught unawares when suddenly a man snatched his cash bag and escaped. Ayampady immediately lodged a complaint with the Pandeshwar police.
The cops led by Pandeshwar Inspector Dinaker Shetty and PSI(Crime) Shivarudrappa immediately launched a search for the thief and found a man lurking around suspiciously near the clock tower.
They immediately apprehended him and when questioning the man confessed the crime. The accused has been identified as Omkar Shetty (30) hailing from Haveri. Sources said he worked for a juice centre near Lady Goschen Hospital.
