Mangalore: District Minister Rai urged to withdraw cases against scribes in homestay attack case

Mangalore, June 8, 2013: A delegation of the DK District Working Journalists Association submitted a memorandum to District in-charge Minister Ramanatha Rai here on June 8, Saturday requesting for steps to withdraw the cases registered against scribes in the homestay attack case.

The delegation apprised the minister that the arrest of a TV journalist and a cameraman who had been to the spot of the attack only to report the incident, was nothing but an infringement of the freedom of the Press.  The delegation also pointed out that the erstwhile government had only assured to drop the charges, but failed to do so.

Stating that if journalist Naveen Soorinje has secured bail in the case, another media representative Sharan has not been released even six months after his arrest. The memorandum requested the minister to ensure steps to see to it that the cases against the two are withdrawn.

The delegation that met the minister included   Journalists’ Union President PB Harish Rai, General Secretary Srinivas Indaje, Treasurer Yogish Holla, Mangalore Press Club  President Ramakrishna R and  General Secretary  Kiran Sirsikar.
