UDUPI, Dec 21, 2012 : There is a need for the society to rededicate itself for the cause of a better environment and a better and pollution free world, said Dr Vaman Acharya, Chairman of Karnataka State Pollution Control Board.


He was speaking after inaugurating an international conference on ‘Environment and Occupational Health” organized at Manipal on December 20, Thursday under the auspices of the Department of Public Health, National Institute of Occupational Health (Ahmedabad)and Regional Occupational Health Center, Bangalore.
The extent of pollution was increasing with technological advancement, he said and added disasters due to environment pollution was nothing new. The industrial revolution has contributed to several mishaps even in Western nations, he said . It is not only River Ganga in India that is polluted, even rivers across the world are polluted , Dr Acharya pointed out.
He also delved on the problems faced by the aerial spray of Endosulfan and said Mangalore and Bhadravathi are the highest polluted cities of the state. He attributed the pollution to the oil refinery in Mangalore and paper mills in Bhadravathi.
Dr H Vinod Bhat, Pro-Chancellor of Manipal University, presided over the function. A journal of the department was released by Dr Nalini Satyakumar, Professor in Alabama University, Birmingham. Dr Ramachandra Kamath, DR HR Rajmohan, and others were present.
