Lorry driver arrested for death of Mulki cop in hit and run case

Mangalore, May 29, 2013 : Mulki police have been successful in tracing the lorry and arresting its driver responsible for the death  of a police personnel, in a hit and run case at the check-post at Mulki Bappanadu on April 5 this year.

Shivarajappa (27), a personnel of the Mulki station was fatally knocked down at the check-post  when he along with his colleagues  Pramod and Seetharam was checking vehicles .  The mishap had taken place when a lorry laden with iron materials from NMPT, which they tried to intercept, did not heed to them but zoomed forth hitting Shivarajappa in the process.

The Mulki police have now been successful in arresting the driver Lohith (23) hailing from Basavapur in Davangere. 

The police who had inspected the CCTV footages  of the CC Camera installed near Hejamady ,on realizing a similarity between the lorry seen in the footage and the one  that hit Shivarajappa,  had checked documents and got hold of Lohith’s number. However, Lohith had kept his mobile switched off for three days and had even removed the rear number plate of his lorry.

The vehicle was also found damaged in the rear after  it had hit the barricade after knocking down Shivarajappa.

The accused has been produced before the court and released on bail. His lorry has been seized. The deceased police personnel  was married just a year and a half ago.
