Kundapur: Worker killed in lightning strike during Highway Work

Kundapur, May 15, 2026: A labourer engaged in highway construction work was killed after being struck by lightning during heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning in Kundapur and Byndoor on Thursday evening.

The deceased has been identified as Ashutosh Singh (35), a native of Punjab. Another worker who was with him sustained injuries and has been admitted to the Government Hospital in Kundapur.

Both were employed by the IRB company, which is executing highway works on the Kundapur-Byndoor National Highway stretch. The incident occurred near the Arate bridge while the workers were on duty in the evening.

Ashutosh Singh suffered severe injuries in the lightning strike and was rushed to the Government Hospital in Kundapur, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Gangolli Police visited the spot and conducted an inspection.
