Kasba Bengre residents up in arms against proposed fish meal unit

Mangalore, Feb 12, 2013  :  The residents of Kasba Bengre  are up in arms against a proposed fish meal unit in a playground in their village. It has been alleged that the Ports Department has leased out the land to a businessman for 30 years to set up the unit.

On February 11, residents of the area, with the support of leaders cutting across party lines staged a protest in front of the DC office in Mangalore under the aegis of the Madrasathuddeeniyya Association, Bengre Jamaath.


Addressing the protestors,  Bilal Moidin, Vice-President of the Jamaath said that setting up of private companies in Bengre  was  detrimental to the interests of the region. He said a fish meal unit in the area would bring more trouble and would also result in environmental pollution. Moreover the people will also have to bear with the foul smell all through the day, he added.


He said no private company would be allowed to be set up in Bengre.


Ivan D’Souza, Congress leader, Nithyadhar of CPI(M), Shriyan Salian of Karnataka Janatha Paksha (KJP), Sadananda Shetty, DM Aslam of JD(S), Abdul Jaleel from SDPI, Shakuntala Shetty, former MLA,  KS Mohammad Masood, Chairman of Muslim Central Committee and several others took part in the protest.
