Karnataka PU Results: Udupi tops list

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, May 11: Once again girls, beating boys, grabbed the first place. 56.62 percent girls have passed while only 42.19 percent boys succeeded to pass the huddle of second PUC examination which was conducted in Mar 2011.

Unfortunately, the state is not even half way from the bottom considering the fact that only 48.93 percent students cleared the exam as against the 49.27 percent last year. Karnataka got a pass percentage of 50 only four times in the past 34 years—in 1977, 2005, 2006, and 2007. The coastal districts are the toppers with Udupi at the top, followed by DK and Uttara Kannada.

However, Udupi’s pass percentage of 87.14 is much lower this year than its pass percentage of 89.01 last year. Still, the teachers, students, and parents are happy that the district has maintained its position as the topper.

While Sanjoth Shetty, a science student in Udupi, has scored 587 out of 600, Andrea Preeth Sequeira of St. Aloysius College Mangalore has secured 98.33 percent, the second highest in the state in the commerce stream.

Of the 6,21,238 students who had answered the PU exams held in March, 2,66,047 passed, which means a pass percent of 59.44 as against the 61.94 of last year. The pass percent of repeaters and private candidates also plunged by 3.81 percent and 2.24 percent, respectively.

In Mathematics, 372 students got 100/100, while 177 students scored cent percent in chemistry and 171 scored cent percent in physics. The pass percent of girls is 56.92 percent as against the 42.19 percent of boys, and the pass percent of rural students is 60.27 percent as against the 59.18 percent of rural students.

S. S. Shinda, the deputy director of pre-university and vocational education, said that the district has 83 PU colleges, of which 41 are government PU colleges and 11 colleges have no principals. He said that surprise inspections were held to maintain the quality of education at these colleges.

Andrea Preeth Sequeira emerges as PU topper
Andrea Preeth Sequeira, a student of St. Aloysius Pre University College, has emerged as the PU topper, having scored 100 in Statistics, 100 in Business Studies, 100 in Accountancy, 99 in Hindi, 99 in Mathematics, and 92 in English, which makes a total score of 590 out of 600. However, she has missed the top score in Karnataka by just 2 marks.
Ms. Sequeira says that she wants to do her CA perhaps because her parents Alphonse Sequeira of Vijaya Bank and Miriam Sequeira of Syndicate Bank are both Commerce students.
Speaking about her daughter’s study habits, Miriam said that she was very disciplined and stuck to a study time table. Andrea would study for 2 hours daily and pay attention in class. Since Andrea loves music, she was in the habit of studying with earphones plugged in.
Andrea’s parents never forced her to take up any course, but allowed her to make her own choice. This was the reason why Andrea, who had scored 97.3 percent in science in her SSLC decided to take up commerce instead of science.
