Mangalore, Oct 11, 2011: The road leading to Mangalore Airport from Karnataka Polytechnic (KPT) Junction to Maravoor was renamed in honor of Bharat Rathna Sir M. Visveshwarayya at a special ceremony organized by the Mangalore City Corportion (MCC) at KPT Circle yesterday.
Krishna J. Palemar, the district-in-charge minister, inaugurated the programme.
Around Rs. 29.32 crore was spent in concretizing the renamed road, and the MCC had contributed Rs. 4.57 crore of it. The State Finance Commission had supplied an amount Rs. 12.50 crore in 2008 – 09 and a union government scheme called Assistance to States for Developing Export Infrastructure and Allied Activities (ASIDE) supplied an amount of Rs. 12.25 crore.
Speaking on the occasion, Palemar said that Sir M. Visveshwarayya Road will soon have storm water drains and footpaths and that the contracts have already been awarded to Nirmiti Kendra, with the labourers being provided by builders in the city.
Mr. Palemar also said that the work on the proposed bus stand at Pumpwell will begin in 2 more days, adding that the MCC will complete the project in 6 months.
