Mangalore, Dec 16, 2013: Dakshina Kannada unit of Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha (KPRS) members holds road blockades at Rao and Rao Circle on Dec 16, Monday urging Central Government to withdraw the decision of banning arecanut.
Addressing the protesters, KPRS District Secretary Yadhav Shetty said that even though the scientific research has proved that areca is not injurious to health, but the Ministry of Health has submitted a report to the Supreme Court to implement ban on gutka, terming areca to be hazardous to health.

He also said that this decision will affect the lives of farmers and their earning. In an affidavit, Central Government had stated that arecanut was not dangerous but mixing it with chemical substances is injurious to health, he added.
Around 11 countries across the world grow arecanut and none of the country has imposed ban on it. The central government must withdraw the move, considering the economy and social condition of arecanut growers, he added.
