Mangalore, April 21,2012: The High Court has issued an interim order on Friday, in which it has directed the district administration of Dakshina Kannada to permit Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals (MRPL) to draw half a million gallon of water per day.
The MRPL had petitioned to the High Court, seeking 2.5MGD water from River Nethravathi for is basic requirements. Owing to the drastic drop in the level of water in Thumbe vented dam, the district administration had permitted MRPL to pump around 0.5 to 0.65MGD water from the Sarapady weir every alternate day during the last week.
Drinking water is being supplied to the city on alternate days too.
Harish Kumar, the commissioner of the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC), informed reporters that the MRPL had made the district administration and not the MCC as a party in its petition. However, the MCC had sent its legal representative to the court because the civic body wanted the court to hear it as the order would have an effect on it.
The district administration is willing to obey the interim order.
