IMD predicts heavy rainfall, issues red alert for DK & Udupi till August 10

Mangaluru, Aug 06, 2022: Extremely heavy rainfall is likely to hammer coastal districts from 8 to 10 August, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted on Saturday. The weather office has issued a red alert six districts of Karnataka - Dakshin Kannada, Uttar Kannada, Shimoga, Udupi, Chikmagalur and Kodagu. Besides these, an orange alert (heavy rainfall) has been issued for Hassan, Yadgir, Gulbarga and Bidar.

The coastal districts have been receiving torrential rain since a few days. The Weather Department had earlier issued a Red Alert till August 7.

The IMD’s Bangalore center on Saturday said that the cyclonic circulation over north Coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining Westcentral Bay of Bengal now lay over northwest Bay of Bengal and neighborhood and extended up to 5.8 km above mean Sea level tilting southwestwards with height. Under its influence, it said, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the same region during the next 24 hours. It is likely to become more marked during the subsequent 24 hours.

The center also predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall spells at isolated places over coastal Karnataka from 7th to 10th and over south interior Karnataka from 6th to 10th.

In a daily bulletin issued on Saturday, the weather department said intense rainfall activity is likely to continue over South and Coastal Karnataka, Konkan, Goa, and Odisha during the next 5 days with extremely heavy rainfall likely over south Karnataka on Sunday, Konkan, and Goa during 8th-10th August and Odisha on 8th and 9th August.

For Odisha, the IMD has predicted heavy rainfall on Sunday in 11 districts - Malkangiri, Koraput, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha, and Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendraparha, and Dhenkanal.
