Mangalore, Sep 17, 2011 : Expressing his concerns for the six fishermen who have been missing for quite a few days now, District-in-charge Minister Krishna J. Palemar said at a gathering in Bunder that the state government has decided to compensate the families of the missing fishermen with Rs. 1 lakh each and Rs. 25,000 for the injured fisherman who is now in hospital.

Speaking about the problems faced by fishermen, he said that the dredging work will soon be done. He also said that the government is planning to find a permanent solution for sea erosion by raising a permanent retention wall. A new dredger will also be brought to remove the silt from the sea, he said.

Further, the minister said that 4 lakh million tons of fish is exported to foreign countries today and that DK alone exports 1,13,000 ton fish, owing to which the government is duty bound to protect fishermen.

He also said that the actions of the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT), which refused entry to injured fishermen without assisting them, are indeed condemnable, adding that strict action will be taken again the port authorities and officials for their merciless behavior.

He also urged fishermen to receive all government benefits.

Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Speaker N. Yogesh Bhat said that the matter of NMPT security personnel refusing entry to injured fishermen has been taken to the CM. He also said that the work of dredging will soon commence because the file related to it will be cleared soon.

Nithin Kumar, the president of KFDC, said that over 1,500 small and big boats engage in fishing activities in Bunder. Regarding the extension of the harbour, he said that the tender process has almost been completed.

Explaining that the sea is very rough near Alive Bagilu, he said that permission is required to enter and exit NMPT, but the authorities sent security forces with guns to turn away the injured fishermen.

Captain Mohan, the director of the harbour, Naveen Karkera, Suresh Kumar, and Umesh Karkera were also present.
