Mangalore, July 22, 2012: A huge girder, which was being transported for the construction of Nethravathi Bridge, fell down and broke into pieces, close to Nethravathi Bridge on the night of July 21, Saturday.
The girder was 33.5m and was the 95th of the 96 girders required for the construction of this bridge, which is almost complete. It rolled out of the trailer that was transporting it when the axle of the trailer tire broke.
The girder is completely damaged and cannot be used; however, the rods are still intact and can be reused.
One wonders about the quality of the bridge if a girder used in its construction can break into pieces after a fall from a low trailer.
