Mangaluru/Udupi, July 28, 2025: Continuous heavy rains over the past few weeks have led to repeated holiday declarations for schools and pre-university colleges in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. To make up for the lost academic days, the Education Department has decided to hold full-day classes on Saturdays, starting after August 15.
The directive will be in force for approximately four months, subject to the prevailing weather conditions.
In Udupi district, where several school days have already been lost to rain, authorities have instructed institutions to conduct afternoon sessions on Saturdays to cover the missed syllabus and maintain academic continuity.
So far, Dakshina Kannada has recorded seven rain holidays, with some taluks receiving additional days off. In Udupi, the Byndoor education block experienced eight rain holidays, while other areas reported up to seven. To compensate, schools have been directed to hold classes on Saturday afternoons.
Implementation from August 15
Dakshina Kannada DDPI Govinda Madivala told Udayavani, “Rain holidays were declared keeping student safety in mind. Consequently, we must recover the lost instructional time. All BEOs have been directed to plan afternoon sessions on Saturdays, and full-day Saturday classes will officially begin after August 15.”
Udupi DDPI Lokesh stated, “Instructions have been issued to hold full-day classes on Saturdays until October. If special or emergency meetings occur, schools may arrange extra sessions on subsequent Saturdays. The directive may be extended depending on the monsoon. There are no plans to conduct classes on Sundays.”
