Mangaluru, July 14, 2024: A fire broke out in a fish processing unit within the Mangaluru Special Economic Zone (MSEZ) in Surathkal on Sunday, July 14, destroying materials stored in the unit’s cold storage.
According to Dakshina Kannada District Fire Officer Mohammed Nawaz, the fire started at 1:30 p.m. in the Authentic Ocean Treasure unit, which had been closed for the past month. Six fire tenders from MSEZ, MRPL, and GMPL responded promptly to extinguish the blaze, with two additional tenders from Fire and Emergency Services arriving soon after. It took nearly three hours to bring the fire under control.
Additional Deputy Commissioner G. Santosh Kumar reported that the fire was likely caused by a short circuit in the unit. There were no injuries, as no employees were present at the time of the incident. Mr. Kumar stated that the Department of Factories and Boilers, along with Fire and Emergency Services, have been instructed to submit a report on the unit’s fire safety and compliance with mandatory regulations.
