Mangalore, May 11: Ten children including a girl who were working as labourers were rescued from the fishing port dock near Bunder at around 6 am on Wednesday May 11.
A team consisting labour department officials, Education department officials, police, health, factory, social welfare, Mangalore City Corporation and women and child welfare conducted the surprise raid near Bunder said Venkatesh, Assistant Labour Commissioner.
Ten children including a girl were found to have been employed there for the work of picking and sorting of fish from the piles of fish catches. The children were taken into possession said Venkatesh, Assistant Labour Commissioner.
Venkatesh Sindhihatti, the assistant labour commissioner, told Mangalore Today that three of the rescued children are above 14 years of age, according to the doctor’s certificates, and one of the remaining seven is a girl.
These children would collect fish and sell it. Currently, they are being taken to the Bala Mandir in Bondel and the CWC will hold a meeting to discuss the matter, he added.
Organizations such as Labour Union, Women and Child Welfare Development, Backward Class Union, Trade Union, ESI Hospital, Wenlock Hospital, among others participated in the raid.
