Addressing reporters at a press conference held in his chamber on Dec 10, Friday, the DC said that the last day to file nominations is Dec 20, Monday and that they will be verified on Dec 21. Candidates should withdraw their nominations, if necessary, before Dec 23. The election notification will be issued on Dec 13, he added.

If required, re-elections will be held on Jan 3, 2011 and votes will be counted on Jan 4, 2011 from 8:00 a.m. The elections will be held on Dec 31 from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., he said, adding that an accountant has been appointed for the purpose.

The DC also revealed that electronic voting machines will be used for the first time in the forthcoming ZP and TP elections and that 50 percent reservation for women will be ensured. The district administration will borrow 3747 ballot units from New Delhi and 810 control units from Bhubaneshwar for the election owing to the shortage of electronic voting machines in DK. Candidate expenditure limits are Rs. 1 lakh for ZP and Rs. 50,000 for TP.

DC Subodh Yadav also said that DK has 9,34,143 eligible voters, who can vote in the forthcoming elections. While 4,65,138 of these are men, 4,69,005 are women.

A total of 1027 polling booths will be set up in Mangalore, of which 233 have been identified as sensitive and 174 have been identified as hypersensitive. Mangalore Taluk has the highest of 299 polling booths while compared to the other four taluks of DK, in which 111 booths have been identified as sensitive and 70 have been identified as hypersensitive.

The DC also said that a model code of conduct will be enforced in Mangalore from the midnight of Dec 6 and urged concerned authorities, especially the police department, to take required steps to maintain peace and law and order in the district.
