DK’s SSLC rank slides to 21st position

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, May 13: DK’s SSLC pass percent has shot up by 6%, but its overall ranking in the state has come down drastically from 8th rank in 2010 to 21st rank in 2011. DK has always occupied a rank within the top 10 ever since 2005, except in 2006 when it got the 11th rank. DK has the sixth largest student population in the state.

Ramachandra Gowda, the subject inspector of the Department of Public Instruction, has voiced his opinion that this could be because the pass percentage of other districts has shot up while DK’s pass percentage remains more or less steady.

DK’s pass percentage over the years has remained more or less steady, with a pass percentage of 73.9 in 2005, 72.87 in 2006, 82.09 in 2007, 76.6 in 2008, 82.02 in 2009, and 72.75 in 2011. This year, DK’s pass percentage increased by 6 percent, but the ranking plummeted to a disappointing 21.

Opining that DK’s ranking ought to have gone up with its increased pass percentage, Gowda said that this did not happen because the other districts have reported better pass percentage. While DK has maintained its steady pass percentage level, its ranking has been seriously affected.

Revealing further statistics, Gowda said that 14 districts reported a pass percentage of 80 while 5 reported a pass percentage of 79, and 3 reported a pass percentage of 78. Better performance on the part of several districts have affected the overall rankings of Mysore, Dhavanagere, and Dharwad, he added.

Udupi slips to sixth place in SSLC results

Udupi: There is some disappointment among students, teachers, and parents in Udupi district after the SSLC results were announced in Bangalore on Thursday.

Udupi district, which was fourth in the State last year (2009-10) with a pass percentage of 77.30, has slipped to the sixth position this year (2010-11) although pass percentage has increased to 84.40.

The district had topped the State in 2008-09 with a pass percentage of 86.39.

After the II Pre-University Course results were announced a couple of days ago, in which the district topped the State, the mood was upbeat. \

But the SSLC results have come as a dampener.

Deputy Director of Public Instruction B.V. Mahidas told The Hindu that there had been some disappointment about SSLC results.

Toppers

Some of the toppers in the SSLC examinations in the district are: Vaishakha, a student of Sri Bhuvanendra High School, Karkala, and Krithika Bhat, a student of St. Cecily’s High School, Udupi, both of whom have got 615 out of 625 marks. Daksha P. Sutar of Volakadu Government Composite High School, Udupi, has secured 613 out of 625 marks.

Three Bellary students emerge as SSLC toppers

The state’s SSLC results of this year are its best ever with a pass percentage of 73.9. Two schools in Bellary have got three ranks.

6.32 lakh of the 8.55 lakh students who answered the SSLC exam this academic year have passed and 2.23 lakh have failed. 80 percent of first-timers cleared their SSLC exams, which means a 12 percent increase from last year. The pass percentage of repeaters and private candidates is 24.1 percent and 11.64 percent, respectively.

Three students have emerged as the SSLC toppers, having scored 620/625. N. Nalini and J. Vishal are students of Vivekananda Bal Bharati High School in Bellary and Aniketh Satyanarayan of Hassan studies in United Academy in Bellary.

Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri, the primary and secondary education minister, released the SSLC results and expressed his delight over excellent results, which he claims to be the result of measures taken by the education department last year. Some of the measures taken were making question banks available, filling up vacant posts, conducting model examinations, arranging subject clubs for teachers, and conducting subject-related contests. Kageri said that efforts were made to convert student weaknesses into strengths.

The pass percentage of girls (82%) is better than the pass percentage of boys (78%). The results of rural areas have shot up by 12 percent to 80 percent while the results of urban areas have also gone up to 77 percent. While Bangalore Rural has emerged as the SSLC topper district, Chikkodi and Mandya follow close behind and Bidar is at the bottom of the list.

This year, 401 government school, 108 aided schools, and 959 private unaided schools recorded cent percent results. Four aided schools and 40 unaided schools reported 0 percent results. Kageri said that show-cause notices have already been sent to these schools.
