Mangalore, July 23: After increasing auto fare by Rs 2 in Bangalore, the Federation of Karnataka Auto Rickshaw Drivers Union (FKARDU), DK have conducted a protest demanding hike in the rickshaw fare in Dakshina Kananada too. The protest was held in front of the deputy commissioner’s office on Friday, July 23. The drivers union has led the protest under the banner of Centre for Indian Trade Union (CITU).

Since the fuel price hike, the auto rickshaw drivers unions have been demanding an increase in the fare. The protest was being conducted in the wake of recent hike in petrol and diesel. In the protest they said that the central government has hiked the price of petrol, diesel and related products. It is very difficult to survive as the price of commodities also gone high.


They urged the government and concerned authority to accede the demand of auto rickshaw drivers as they demanded a hike in fares to cope with the recent increase in fuel prices. They have contended that the auto fare must be revised by Rs. 2


Recently, prices of petrol and diesel have gone up by Rs 3.83 and Rs 2.06 per litre respectively in the city, following the upward revision of petroleum products announced by the union government.


A litre of petrol now costs Rs 56.76 against Rs 52.93 earlier and diesel Rs 41.43 against Rs 39.37 earlier. In Udupi, a litre of diesel now costs Rs 41.52 (Rs 39.46 earlier) and petrol Rs 56.85 (Rs 53.03 earlier).


The price of auto LPG too has gone up by 32 paise to reach Rs 31.46 per litre, up from Rs 31.14 earlier.


In Bangalore, drivers union has demanded that the minimum fare could be hiked to Rs 16 or Rs 17.  The unions have been demanding that the minimum fare be raised to Rs 20 from the present Rs 14. There are at least 80,000 autos in Bangalore.


Autorickshaw fares were hiked with effect from Thursday in Mumbai and nearby Thane. While the minimum fare has gone up from Rs.9 to Rs.11 for the first 1.6 kilometers, every subsequent kilometre would cost Rs.6.50, up from Rs.5 now.
