Crucial issues discussed at ZP meeting

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, March 1, 2012 : Various issues such as drinking water, social security, and Koraga welfare were discussed at the annual general body meeting of the DK Zilla Panchayat.

zp1   Drinking water

Although a number of regions across the district are already feeling the scarcity of drinking water, the house failed to find any solution to the problem and attempts to discuss crucial issues ended up in quarrels of political nature. The Congress and the BJP blamed each other for the drinking water crisis, resulting in an argument that led nowhere.

Speaking on the occasion, M. S. Mohammed of the Congress party said that although the government has formed task forces to deal with drinking water issues in taluks, only the MLA has the power to utilize funds for the same. He suggested that ZP members must be given the power to sanction funds for projects because they are more capable of getting the work done.

Further elaborating on the problem, he said that MLAs never get in direct contact with the people, but ZP members do. He urged MLAs to come and answer public queries. He suggested that the government must release funds to dig five borewells each in 35 ZP constituencies.

Social Security

Regarding the delay in reaching social security benefits to the needy, the house decided to meet the DC within 10 days and find solutions for the problem. Benefits such as widow pension, pension for the elderly, pension for the disabled, and so on are not reaching the beneficiaries.

Koraga Welfare

Raising the issue of Koraga welfare, ZP CEO Dr. K. N. Vijayaprakash said that nodal officers have been appointed to oversee implementation of various Koraga welfare schemes.

The focus is on preventing students dropping out of school in the Koraga community and the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, the education department, and the Woman and Child Welfare Department has been instructed to work for this, he said.
