Mangalore, Apr 17, 2012: Nina Nayak, the chairperson of the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, heard complaints regarding child rights violation from NGOs at a public meeting held in the DC’s office on April 17 Tuesday. Although the meeting was open for the public, no member of the public was present.
P. V. Mohan, the member of the Mangalore University Syndicate, said that several city-based orphanages take in destitute children, but moral police are slapping allegations of religious conversion against them.
He also complained that certain private educational institutions have been violating the Supreme Court verdict that all schools, excluding minority institutions, are required to reserve 25 percent seats for poor children.
Someone else complained that the government has not recruited any teacher for a school in Belthangady, which occupies the number one position among 14 other schools in the district with regard to exam results.
It was also suggested that each Gram Panchayat must have open playground facilities for children.
Considering the rising number of students committing suicide, it was suggested that counseling centres must be opened for SSLC students.
Dr. K. N. Vijayaprakash, the CEO of the Zilla Panchayat, said that electricity will be supplied to all anganwadis under the Rajiv Gandhi Electricity Project. He added that fans will also be provided.
In response to Hilda Rayappan’s complaint that some teachers mark present even for students who are absent to get better records, the DC said that he has visited a number of schools and hasn’t noticed any such discrepancy.
Asha Nayak, the president of the Child Welfare Committee, was also present.
