Capt. Karnik regrets lack of employable skills in majority of graduates

Mangalore, Jan 23, 2013: Most of the young graduates who come out of colleges, lack the skills required  to be employable and skill development in students is the biggest challenge  facing the educational sector, said MLC Capt. Ganesh Karnik.

He was speaking after inaugurating a two day UGC sponsored National Level Conference on ‘Higher Education-Challenges Ahead’ organised by the Centre for Advanced Studies in Commerce and Management  of Canara First Grade College here on January 23, Wednesday.  India is a nation which worshipped knowledge, Capt Karnik said and  attributed the present problems confronting the educational scenario in India to the aping of the West.

Today students are attaining higher education without any clear cut objective in life, he said  and added the result was that  70 per cent of the graduates remain unemployable. He also called for a change in the present education system in order to enable it to face the challenges effectively.

SS Kamath, senior chartered accountant, presided over the function. Prof. M Satish Bhat, Principal of Canara College, Prof. BS Bhat, AMUCT President Norbert Lobo and others were present.
