Mangalore, Feb 27 2011: Presenting a paper titled “Six Decades of Indian Democracy” at a state-level conference organized by the Campus Front of India (CFI) on Feb 27, Sunday, Shivasunder, the human rights activist and popular columnist, appreciated student’s efforts to create social change.
Stating that the gap between the rich and the poor in the country is Rs 1 to Rs. 3000, he said that the rich are becoming richer while the poor are becoming poorer. Expressing concerns that only a few people in India are really enjoying their freedom, he said that India needs a movement such as “Tahir Square.”
Advocate A. Mohammed Yusuf, the national president of CFI, said in his inaugural address that the conference has been organized to initiate positive changes in society and to enhance awareness of student rights. Stating that the nation is in the evil clutches of saffron activists and the ABVP, he said that saffron should be transferred into white, which stands for peace and harmony. Urging for the eradication of commercialization in education, he appreciated CFI’s move to protect human rights, campus rights, and minority rights.
A huge rally was organized from Pumpwell Circle to the venue of the conference in the afternoon. A number of cultural activities were also arranged.
CFI President Mohammed Shakeer presided over the event. Abdul Salam Puttige, the editor of Vartha Bharathi; Pattabhiram Somayaji, an English lecturer in Mangalore University; K. M Sharif, the national chief secretary of PFI; and others were also present. Abdul Rahman, the secretary of the committee, welcomed the gathering. Imran Khan delivered the vote of thanks; and Nazeer and Abdul Raheem compered the programme.
